A lucid, soundly critical reflection, which -- as you know -- resonates with me.

Matt—this is enormously helpful to me personally. As you know I spent fifteen years in discipleship to an Eastern master. When I converted to Christian faith, I “threw out the baby with the bath water”—and seldom if ever looked back to see and sort through those years. I am just now, 40 years hence, considering writing a book about my sojourn in order to do that sorting — and possibly discover that “baby” again. Your careful analysis here helps as a starting point. One thought to add: it was Martin Buber’s I and Thou which moved me in the late 1970s toward biblical faith. His dogged insistence with Carl Jung that it is not attainment or balancing of the shadow that yields wisdom, rather it is relationship with God, with others. Not gnosis but pistis and kenosis.
